Action Replay DSi

  • This is a mixed review. The product and the software work great for older titles. Do not expect to find easy access to games that have been released in oh say the last 6 months. It does do what it says while it works!

So the Pro’s- lots of games to choose from, software is fairly straightforward if you even need it. As mentioned, don’t expect new game titles to be available with it for about 6 months.

The Cons- these devices are very poor quality!! After having gone through a couple, I finally decided to open one up to figure out what was wrong. Yes I know that voided the warranty!!! Guess what? Over half of the solder joints on the connector were poor, or even not soldered! I suspect that is what reviewer one got when he tried to use his? Yes, every day handling of inserting and removing a game cartridge will loosen, or break the solder joints so that the device stops working. I verified on my other non working units as well- all had the solder issue on the connector.

Recommendation- Go ahead and buy the device, but DEFINITELY keep the receipt and packaging handy! You will need it when you have to return this for the above mentioned poor workmanship standards and to get your refund, or a new device.

Oh- BTW, when I notified Datel of my findings on 5 units, their only response was to say, well you shouldn’t have opened it, ’cause now we can’t help you! Rather than, “Thanks alot for bringing this quality issue to our attention! We’ll get right on a corrective action” LOL. So, as mentioned, Buyer Beware.

  • I got Action Replay for my son because he wanted to collect powers and Pokemon to play against his friends. When we first used AR it was confusing. The GUI could be better. We figured it out and were able to load codes without too many stumbles.

    THE RISK

We were at a GameStop store purchasing games when a boy came in with his DS not working. The clerk at the store said he had corrupted the firmware code by using Action Replay. It is not a warranty repair. This made quite an impression on my son. He did not want his prized possession to be “bricked” and useless.

I did some research online and confirmed what I heard at GameStop. Action Replay can corrupt your DSi. The fun of playing with cheat codes was not worth the risk for us.

Google Search: Action Replay, Bricked (Hey, I didn’t make this stuff up) Some of the corruption issues can be cleaned up.

The main issue that most will experience is that the Action replay will reef the card port in your game system. It sticks out of the most delicate part of your game like a pry bar. This can put unwanted pressure on your card slot and affect the pins insde it. A more mature user can be carefull but the average kid not so much.

    FROM NINTENDO’S SITE

The game cheating device, Action Replay, has not passed our testing process to ensure it will work safely and properly with our system and games. These types of unlicensed accessories run the risk of corruption issues with save files or causing permanent damage to the system/games they are used with. Action Replay is not a device Nintendo can recommend using, this is why the thread has been locked.

To see if an accessory has passed our testing process, you can look on the packaging for the Seal of Quality. This seal is a small circle with a black or gold starburst around it. Inside it reads, “Official Nintendo Seal.” This seal lets you know the product has passed our testing and evaluation process.

From an independent online DS repair facility:

Regarding the Action Replay… in most case, the Action Replay may never

cause a problem. However, these types of devices are not recommended by

Nintendo because of the potential damage they can cause. We have seen

systems that were damaged by them, not only the firmware, but also the

game slot. If your system firmware becomes corrupted, you can only

replace the motherboard to fix it. Personally, I think the risks are not

worth the ability to use the cheat codes.

It’s up to you if the risk is acceptable. Hard core gamers swear by it.

  • I got mine in the mail a few days ago, and now i don’t know how I ever lived without it. The directions are easy and I was wizzing through hard levels in no time. I have about forty something games, and almost every one had some codes. If you want more codes, you can just go online and enter some more. Every so often a certain code wont work well with others or it might come with a glitch; For instance: In the game, Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, if you make the boat go twice the speed, it wont stay on course, and it’ll frequently go in circles. However, I can live without it, because I love being able to “super jump” Link to all the places I couldn’t reach before, and of course, the infinite health has been a real bonus:-)

I have so many games that I’ve put on the back burner because I just couldn’t get through a certain level or defeat some baddie and lost patience trying, so it’s great to go back and do what I got to do. The only problem I had was I had to take my DSi out of a hard protective case to push the Action Replay Card in the port. It’s not a crisis, so I didn’t deduct any stars. I’m really enjoying it and I haven’t had any major problems. If I do come across any major or minor problems, I’ll try to update. Thanks for reading.

  • This is definitely one of the best products ever made. I use Action Replay all of the time. It works most often, and if it freezes you just have to restart it, which takes about 5 seconds. It never goes out of date because you can put on new codes all of the time. If your computer can not load mini CDs then just type in the codes by hand; it’s that easy. I used AR to beat my Mario Kart game. I totally recommend this product; it’s worth $20.

  • Hey there everyone! I recently just bought this product off amazon and i must say it is awesome!! The menu is newer, the software was easy to install and for all those who are wondering…YES! This product has been sucessfully installed in my 32-bit Windows 7 Ultimate and works without fail. Not only that but it also contains a micro sd slot for either homebrew or game saves….definately worth it’s price!!!
